The condition of a composition reading as one thing rather than an assembly of parts, produced by repetition, alignment, proximity, and a deliberately limited vocabulary. Unity on its own is monotony; the counterweight is variety — enough difference to hold attention without breaking the whole.
In practice
'Unity' names a result and gets used as though it were a technique. You cannot apply unity; you can only remove whatever is breaking it.
Not to be confused with
- HarmonyAgreement among parts that differ — elements drawn from a common family, related by shared proportion, angle, or interval, so they read as belonging together. Harmony concerns the relationship between parts; unity concerns the whole they make. Harmonious parts can still fail to make one thing.
- PrägnanzThe overarching gestalt claim: of the readings a stimulus permits, perception settles on the simplest, most regular, most stable one. 'Simplest' was never given an agreed metric, which is the principle's standing weakness — the information-theoretic attempts to formalize it have not settled the question.
