Edge ring

Also called ring

The set of edges lying across a loop rather than along it — each is the opposite edge of the next quad in a chain, so a ring and a loop run perpendicular to one another through the same band. A ring is not a connected path of edges; it is a sequence of parallel rungs.

In practice

Ring-select then connect is the standard way to add a loop where the automatic tool refuses — it survives poles that stop loop-select cold. The two selections look similar on screen and are structurally opposite.
