Sand casting

Also called greensand casting, greensand, sand moulding

Packing bonded sand around a pattern, withdrawing the pattern, and pouring metal into the cavity it leaves. The mould is broken up afterwards and the sand reused. Cheap at almost any size, but the surface arrives grainy and the pattern needs generous draft to pull out without collapsing the walls behind it.

Section through a two-box sand mould. Cope above, drag below, meeting on the parting line; a sand core suspended in the cavity forms an internal bore, with sprue and riser rising from either end.

Origin

The sand is "green" in the founder's sense of uncured, not the colour — greensand is damp clay-bonded sand, rammed and poured wet, never baked.
